Baguio City - Day 1

Minggu, 21 November 2010

I've been to Baguio which is a province in the northern part of the Philippines for a number of times. But this is the first time with the boyfriend which apparently is a Baguio virgin. Hailed as the Summer Capital of the country, Baguio is also a very urbanized city. A lot of establishments are already in place that you can't miss anything you can see and eat in Manila. A lot of tourists flock the place all year long for its cool and breezy climate. Most specially during their Panagbenga Festival (Flower Festival) which is a month long celebration as a tribute to the city's flowers.

My last trip to Baguio was 3 years ago with some friends and I can't believe I missed a lot of great restaurants when we went there. We were lucky that I have relatives living there that showed us around for free. :) We arrived at the city at around 12 noon and instantly felt the colder temperature as we stepped of the bus. A one way trip from Cubao to Baguio and vice versa via Victory Liner is P430 each. We only slept during the 8-hour ride and occasionally stopping for restroom breaks which is included in the bus' itinerary.

Our first stop was OMG or Oh My Gulay. It is a vegetarian resto and art gallery located on the top floor of La Azotea Bldg in Session Road. It took me a while to understand how a beautiful restaurant like this is on top of a building that you will most likely ignore if you don't know about it.

I'm sure artists and architecture enthusiasts alike will enjoy the place. I marveled at every detail of the place and can't stop taking pictures. I can go here everyday with a good book and order a big mug of coffee to spend the day and never get tired of it. Since we were planning to have pizza for dinner we ordered salads and the boyfriend ordered Talong (eggplant) Parmigiana.

I'm a fan of salads. I grew up with salads everyday as you would like a normal kid living in Europe. My mom used to always prepare every kind of salad she can as a side dish for every meal that we have. I can say that in my long time dining experience, the salads here in OMG is one of the best - est and freshest I ever tried. Their lettuces are sweet and crunchy, paired with succulent tomatoes and minty water crest. The croutons in the Caesar Salad are fresh home made bread sliced into bite size pieces. The dressings aren't too powerful and just right. The Talong Parmigiana is not too oily and the baguette is not too hard and not too soft. I can go on and on raving about it but there's no other way to best describe the food unless you try it.

Moving on, we just walked ourselves along Session Road and passed by the cathedral and the plaza. We just savored and enjoyed the cool and almost pollution-free weather. At around 6pm, we went to Pizza Volante for dinner and to meet Bon - my other cousin and his girlfriend, Maan. We just ordered one big pizza for the 4 of us and enjoyed catching up. One thing that is really true about eating with good company is, you tend to eat a lot. We then went to a bar for a few drinks and called it a night. The boss and I haven't slept since we got out of work that morning and our eyes were surrendering to sleep.
