For our Boracay trip, the boss and I failed to find our Kid of the Trip after walking for countless of hours in Station 2 and 3. We even tried walking through tiny streets to the main road under the drizzling rain. So we decided to just look for 2 lucky kids in Kalibo before our flight back to Manila. Our flight was still at 5 in the afternoon but we checked out from our resort at 11am and hopped a van to Kalibo.
We had lunch at Ted's La Paz Batchoy at Gaisano Mall and checked in one of our bags and started our hunt under the heat of the midday sun. After 45 minutes, we started to ask people about a plaza where kids can be found. But there were no one. I actually had the feeling that we will be bringing the items back home. We decided to go back to the mall and luckily, on our way, we saw a little boy who was barefoot who ran to an alley upon seeing us.
So we followed him and saw him seated beside his mother. Turns out it was an alley to the market. We were really clueless about the place please forgive us.
His name is Jerry . Very shy and timid. He was not even looking at me even if I tried to make a conversation. I just talked to his mom who sells medicinal herbs to help Ronald's father who works in an Orchidarium. Ronald is the 3rd child in a brood of 6. He doesn't go to school because they can no longer afford it. He goes with his mom to the market everyday to help her sell.
I told Ronald's mother about our cause and she was thankful but she also asked me if I can give clothes instead. I apologized and said that those were the only items I have and they were also gifts from my friends.
Ronald was very, very shy. I wanted to have a picture with him but he declined with a smile. A lot of people were watching us by the time I gave him the school supplies.
I finally said goodbye to Ronald after failing to get a picture with him. He just smiled and started rummaging the contents in the envelope. I felt he was happy. :)
Hasta luego!
