Happy Labor Day folks! I am here at work but still happy because we found a Kid of the Trip in Mt. Batulao when we were there last weekend! (blog post to follow!)
But first things first, have you checked out the recent seat sale of our favorite local carriers? 3 of them are on sale now (remember every Labor Day is a Seat Sale Day!) so make sure to book your tickets for your next vacation and hunt the internet jungle for cheap accommodations! Who wants to stay in a posh hotel if you will be outside 80% of the time? For us, we tend to splurge on everything else like food and activities but never on accommodation because we are cheap like that! Hehe! I recently discovered Airbnb and I've seen nice and sleek rooms from trusted home owners. I cannot wait to book our room through them when we go to Kota Kinabalu in the future and maybe try to join as well to house tourists from the around the world too! Mi casa es tu casa! (my house is your house!) Anyway, on with my story!
Equipped with nothing but slippers, Niño guides climbers in Mt. Batulao for a living to help his parents. He gets P100 from his total earnings and gives the rest to his mom. He also has 2 younger siblings doing the same work. Third child in a brood of 5, Niño is shorter than your average 12-year-old-incoming-grade-6 student. His sun - kissed skin tone proved that he has been making a playground out of the mountain. We didn't talk much with him as he seemed to be in a hurry and he was very shy. So we gave him our little envelope with a few school supplies that he or his younger sister can use and said goodbye. Little did we know that upon reaching the summit, we will meet his mother who sells cold sodas as a living. Too bad I was preoccupied with the view and missed the chance of talking to her.
A little later on our way to the old camp, we bumped into Niño again and his sweet smile comforted me that he was happy, in his own shy kind of way. :)
